With summer in full swing, the Board of Health encourages residents to take precautions to stay safe during periods of extreme heat and help prevent heat-related illness. We also invite you to connect with our Dedham Organization for Substance Awareness (DOSA) team at upcoming community events to learn more about local prevention, education, and support resources.

What You Need to Know
- Peak Danger Hours: 11 AM – 4 PM
- Cooling Centers: Open daily (see below)
- Who’s at Risk?
- Older adults (65+)
- Young children
- People with chronic illnesses
- Outdoor workers
- Residents without AC
Tips to Beat the Heat
- Stay Cool: Spend time in air-conditioned places. If you don’t have AC at home, visit public spaces like the library, community center, or a local café.
- Hydrate: Drink plenty of water. Avoid alcohol and sugary drinks.
- Dress Smart: Wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothing.
- Limit Outdoor Activity: Reschedule strenuous activity to early morning or evening.
- Check on Neighbors: Especially elderly or medically vulnerable residents.
- Never Leave Children or Pets in Cars: Not even for a minute.

INTERNATIONAL OVERDOSE AWARENESS DAY
August 31 marks
International Overdose Awareness Day, a time to remember those lost to overdose, support grieving families, and raise awareness about prevention. From
August 24–31, memorial flags will be displayed at
Barnes Memorial Park, with each flag representing a life lost to an overdose in Massachusetts during 2025. We invite the community to visit the display in remembrance and solidarity.

Join DOSA at the Summer Stroll on Thursday, July 16! Stop by our booth to learn about local prevention resources, upcoming programs, and ways to get involved in the community. While you're there, take a spin on our prize wheel—you might walk away with more than just great information!
