Tips to Stay Safe During Extreme Heat

Cool off with us at Town Hall, Senior Center, and both Libraries to beat the heat
Post Date:07/01/2026 10:00 am

With extremely hot temperatures expected this week, the Town of Dedham is urging residents to take precautions, stay hydrated, and know the signs of heat-related illnesses. A series of informational graphics has been released to help the community stay safe and cool.

If you lose power:

  • Report the outage to Eversource right away by calling 1-800-592-2000 or text STAT to 23129 to get power alerts and restoration times
  • Let the Fire Dept. know your power is out by calling 1-781-751-9400.
  • For all emergencies, call 911 immediately

Ways to Stay Cool

Residents are encouraged to:

  • Drink water frequently, even when not feeling thirsty.
  • Slow down and avoid strenuous outdoor activity.
  • Use air conditioning on days over 90 degrees and keep blinds closed to reduce indoor temperatures.
  • Visit Town facilities—including Town Hall, Ames Senior Center, and the Public Libraries—during business hours to cool off.
  • Take advantage of Community Rooms at the Dedham Housing Authority, which offer 24/7 air conditioning to residents.
  • Check on elderly family members, friends, and neighbors.
  • Never leave children or pets inside a vehicle at any time.

Recognizing Heat-Related Illnesses

Two serious conditions, heat stroke and heat exhaustion, can develop quickly in extreme heat.

Heat stroke symptoms may include:

  • A body temperature above 104°F
  • Hot, red, dry, or moist skin
  • Rapid, strong pulse
  • Confusion, fainting, seizures, or possible unconsciousness
  • Trouble speaking or thinking clearly

If heat stroke is suspected, call 911 immediately, move the individual to a cooler area, loosen clothing, apply cool wet cloths, and offer water if possible.

Heat exhaustion symptoms may include:

  • Heavy sweating and intense thirst
  • Weakness, dizziness, irritability
  • Cold, pale, clammy skin
  • Fast, weak pulse
  • Decreased urine output

If someone shows signs of heat exhaustion, relocate them to a cooler place, loosen clothing, apply cool wet cloths, encourage water intake, and seek medical care if vomiting persists.
