Select Board Meeting Recap: June 18, 2026
The Select Board met on Thursday, June 18, 2026 at Town Hall and via Zoom. Below are the key highlights from the meeting (not official meeting minutes):
Sawmill Lane Pollinator Pathway Signage Approval
The Conservation Agent presented a final update on the Sawmill Lane Pollinator Pathway project. The first trees have been planted, and the project’s final step is installation of educational signage funded entirely through grant dollars.
Two types of signs will be added:
- One large welcome and educational sign
- Eight small plant identification markers along the pathway
The Select Board unanimously approved the installation. A ribbon cutting is planned for late summer.
Sustainability Advisory Committee Update
The Sustainability Advisory Committee shared progress on its three priority areas:
- Waste reduction: Planning a “Skip the Stuff” pilot with Dedham Square restaurants to reduce unnecessary utensils and condiments in takeout orders; participation in Town recycling events; promoting compost bin sales.
- Decarbonization and energy savings: Exploring MassSave’s Existing Building Commissioning (EBCx) program; supporting the Town’s efforts to qualify as a Massachusetts Climate Leader Community.
- Communication: Collaborating with Town staff to highlight sustainability efforts and reviewing the 2020 Climate Action & Resiliency Plan for updated priorities.
Select Board members expressed interest in continued partnerships, updates on waste management planning, and exploring opportunities for Town solar reporting.
Animal Control Intermunicipal Agreement with Westwood
The Select Board reviewed the Town Manager’s request to begin negotiations with Westwood to extend the shared Animal Control Officer agreement. Increased call volume from Westwood will warrant an updated cost share, rising from $4,000 annually to $10,000 by FY28. The Select Board authorized the Town Manager to move forward with formal negotiations.
Discussion: Temporary Extension of On‑Premises Alcohol Sales
The Select Board considered whether to allow restaurants to extend alcohol service by one additional hour, up to 2 a.m., during the temporary World Cup legislation window. After discussion, the Board voted 4–1 to adopt the temporary extension through July 31, 2026. No individual licenses have been approved to extend service hours.
E‑Bike and E‑Scooter Safety Discussion
The Select Board and Police Chief discussed growing safety concerns related to e‑bikes and e‑scooters, especially involving youth riding without helmets or using sidewalks improperly. The Select Board requested expanded public education, collaboration with the schools, and stronger communication regarding rules and safe riding. Additional outreach is planned for the start of the new school year.
Compliance Hearing Scheduled
The Select Board scheduled a compliance failure hearing for Orchid 7 Fusion Bar & Grill on July 23, 2026.
